Science and pirates!
Research
The first year of the CoMPLEX programme is a Master in Research course during which we get to explore different aspects of biological modeling through lectures, case essays and a summer project.
Summer project
My summer project was entitled ‘Non-invasive mouse embryonic stem cells population estimation using machine vision‘. The idea was to develop an image-processing approach to the monitoring of the cell density in adherent cultures, without any interference with the culture itself (dyes, detachement, etc…). You can find the abstract and a link to the report on my summer project page.
Case essays
The three case essays I worked on are listed here, clicking on their name brings you to a dedicated page where you can find the abstract and a link to download a PDF version of the essay:
- Synthetic gene network for the efficient generation of induced pluripotent stem cells from adult somatic cells
- Computational inference of cis-regulatory elements involved in transcriptional regulation of sex-biased gene expression in Drosophila
- An image-processing tool for the quantitative study of the developing Drosophila retina
Marine biology poster
We had the chance to spend a week at the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth. There we learnt more about animal behavioural studies, field work and species identification. Upon return, we were asked to produce a poster related to marine biology. Together with Donal O’Donoghue we chose Coccolithophores are our topic of interest. Shown below is the poster we produced, click it for a larger version or download the pdf (~5 MB).
